I would prefer to write this review after some time has passed, but I want to make sure I get my thoughts out here early on. This is my third kitchen scale. I bake all my own bread at home and good baking requires weighing the ingredients rather than volume measuring. This scale feels very light which made me nervous at first, but I've used it for three weeks now, through a lot of baking over the holidays, and my concerns seem out of line. This scale fits all my needs. Here is what I look for: 1. CAPACITY - AT LEAST 10 LB (this has 11 lb, or 5 kg). This is required to be able to tare out a glass bowl which can weigh near 5 lbs empty. 11 lb is still borderline when I'm making bread in a 6 qt kitchenaid bowl, but I just weigh ingredients separately in another bowl if it becomes a problem. 2. PRECISION - DOWN TO 1 GRAM - Another scale I have was only good to 5 grams and, although this was probably good enough, it drove me nuts not to be able to go down to 1 gram 3. STABLE PLATFORM FOR VESSELS -- My previous scale had a platform that sat on top of a pillar and eventually came detached. After that it was a balancing act to weight anything 4. ORDINARY BATTERIES -- I liked my old scales fine, but it drove me crazy that I had to keep buying overpriced CR2032 batteries for the things. These batteries don't last long and cost too much to replace. I can't figure out why they use these "button batteries" rather than the more common higher capacity AAA, AA, C, D, etc cells. It's not like these scales are micro-sized. In any event A BIG BIG PLUS for this scale is that it uses standard batteries! Don't sell this point short. 5. PRICE -- $50, $30, $70 for a scale to do this is crazy. the circuitry in these things is cheap. It's not rocket science. All these scales that have "features" are a waste of money. This scale does what needs to be done for $20. 6. FEATURES -- Zero the scale, read negative numbers, switch between metric and English weights, tare a bowl....that's it...that's all you need. All the rest of it is a waste of money and a further chance for failure. this does what is needed and no more. 7. EASY TO READ -- big numbers. this scale is good....Not so good about this scale (and the ONLY problem I have so far) is that big bowls tend to cover the read out a little and make it hard to pick up the weight. So far it hasn't been a big deal, but it can be a slight annoyance. BOTTOM LINE: This scale gets 100% on items 1-6 and about 50% on item 7 for a 93% grade overall...enough for me to give it 5 out of 5 stars. The only remaining unrated item is DURABILITY....I'll report back in a year. My old, $50 scale only lasted 3.5 years. We love this product! The features on it are fantastic. We especially like the probe setting. You simply insert the probe into your meat and it will monitor the cooking process until the meat has reached the desired temperature. It then automatically switches to a low setting to keep your meal warm until you are ready to eat. There's no guessing how long it will take to cook. Throw in a few vegetables and have a home-cooked meal with very little fuss! Another awesome feature is the clip-tight gasket lid. It's perfect for traveling to pot-luck dinners without worrying that you will ruin the upholstery in your car from a spill. Our family highly recommends this product! One note of caution. Watch the price when ordering online. A 180 lumen spotlight/flashlight. It lights up your whole bedroom, or hallway on the way to the bathroom at 2:00am! Very Bright. DON'T LOOK AT THE LIGHT!!! Light weight, fits the hand good. I wanted a flashlight that did not need bulb replacement, this one has a "forever bulb". I wanted a flashlight that uses AA, this uses 4 AA and has a 5 hour run time. In a 4 day outage it should last if used conservatively. For me it is a perfect flashlight/spotlight. Instructions on installing batteries is non-existent and hard to figure out. The black bottom UNSCREWS! and the batteries go in two positive inward, and two positive outwards. There are little TINY pictures that show which way so look carefully. All in all a 5/5 and a good deal to boot!! With another small item, free shipping is available. Edit: Bought in Nov, 09. Now Apr, 2010. Still on original batteries, with no recharge! Not as bright of course, just a noticeable tad less, but still bright enough for indoors, and still shines across the street, real good. Real good for a 5 hour continuous run time. I positively love my OXO fat separator! It holds a good amount of liquid, but not so much as to be difficult to pour. The lid helps strain out the solids, but if you want your broth to be absolutely clear, put a piece of cheesecloth over the lid. IMPORTANT - the little black stopper MUST be inserted in the pouring spout before you add liquids to the cup or the fat will simply rise up in the spout. The stopper creates a vacuum, forcing the fat into the main body of the cup. When you're ready to pour, remove the stopper and the fat will remain floating in the body of the cup. This cup is made out of high-quality plastic and washes up well in the dishwasher. It doesn't stain when you wash it with the tomato sauces! I read the reviews and am probably as skectical as anyone. When I received my Thermos - I filled it with hot water and dumped it as a preheat. Then I filled it with 200 degree water. In two hours it was 190 degrees. After four hours it was 180 degrees and after six hours, it was 170 degrees. The matching mugs - filled at the same time. After six hours they were at 160 degrees. The lids are a little more complex to take apart than some suggested, but nothing a reasonable person who can read directions should have a problem with. The seals are as leakproof as suggested. and the dark blue is just beautiful. Taken in total, the thermo and the mugs are awesome. They aren't cheap, but still are an excellent value. We live in a 4 level split home. Our gas furnace is on the lower, 3rd level. Two years ago we had several smoke alarms, but only one carbon monoxide detector on the top, bedroom level of our home. One early Saturday morning we awoke to the voice of this alarm broadcasting, "WARNING! CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED!" over and over again. I got out of bed and took the batteries out of the unit. By then my then 16 year old daughter came out of her room and was watching me. I told her to go back to bed, but she asked me why we weren't going outside to our designated emergency spot. I thought I was being a bad example after all the years of telling the children to get our of the house if an alarm went off. I didn't think there was a problem. I assumed the unit was broken or needed a new battery. I wasn't thinking clearly. So, I put the batteries back in to see if it would go off again. It did. She again asked why we weren't following the rules and going outside, so we left the house and called 911. When the firemen arrived I kept apologizing for calling them to our home for an obvious mistake. I thought the firemen would tell us it was a false alarm. It wasn't. The heater core had cracked and was leaking carbon monoxide. The levels were high enough to make us confused, but not yet put us to sleep. Had my daughter not watched me handle the alarm I would have gone back to sleep without ever putting the batteries back in. We were very lucky to have my daughter and this CM detector. The voice made everything so much clearer than just a siren. If it hadn't said "carbon monoxide" I would have left the batteries out and gone back to sleep because I couldn't see any smoke or fire and I was tired. I don't think I would have thought about carbon monoxide. It was well worth every penny. I now have CM detectors on every floor of my home. I love this little helping hand -- can't believe how handy it is. As a jewelry designer, it's a must have for holding bracelets while I add parts to it. The adjustable arms work perfectly so that I can customize to the size of the item I'm working on. I have found it just as helpful with necklaces, because of how wide I can adjust the clips. Also, the clips are quite strong, so no chance of anything falling off. When it came in the mail, it was totally assembled, however, the nuts were so tight, I had to ask my other half to loosen them so I can move everything as I need. He fussed at me for spending so much money on another tool. He thought it cost between $30 and $50. He quit fussing when I told him how affordable it was. It is definitely worth the price. In order to keep it from tipping over, I keep the magnifier toward the back to give it balance (that's all I use the magnifier for). That gives it enough weight to counter the weight of the jewelry I'm working on. I have a magnifying lamp that I use for better vision, so the magnifier serves no other purpose than for balance -- but it works perfectly. This tool has ended a lot of frustration, making my work much more enjoyable. I have had the Gerber Shard for a few months now and have traveled on an airplane several times. While I have not had the Shard confiscated yet, airport security does look at it very carefully. I had one TSA agent ask me flat out what it was and I told him it was a bottle opener. With that being said, I have tried what I think are all "7 uses" which I have listed below. 1. Bottle opener = works well and looks more respectable on my keychain over the Coors Light one I had on there 2 & 3. Small and medium flat drivers = too wide for most screws that you might use 4. Philips screwdriver = works well with smaller head screws but not helpful on even medium sized screws 5. Wire stripper = not very effective as you have to be very careful so as not to rip the wire, much easier to use a normal wire stripper 6. Pry bar = very effective, I was able to open a can of paint with no problems 7. lanyard/keychain attachment hole (kind of a stretch calling this a use) = large lanyard hole which easily accommodates key chains or hooking to your pack In terms of the 7 uses, I would say besides the bottle opener the pry bar is the only really other "useful tool. If you liked the old USA made Swing-Away can openers, this is the one you want! After buying junk chinese knock off can openers for the past few years that have to be replaced after using them a few times, I searched everywhere for an old Swing Away brand can opener like the ones that used to last a lifetime but they too are now made in China and after a few uses, will become worthless. After searching, I found the EZ-Duz-It brand can opener that is made right here in the USA using all quality components, right down to the tool hardened cutting wheel and gears. There have been no hick-ups on any can, large or small, that I have tried this on. It grips the can and smoothly cuts it perfectly all the way around without ever getting off track or chewing up the can edge. It's so good, that I ordered three just in case because finding quality like this is more of an exception rather than a rule now days. I've been using this filter for many years now and we feel good that PUR filters filter out more unhealthy stuff in the water than other brands do. However, the new design for this replacement filter doesn't come with the red moving reminder (for you to know it's time to change the filter) anymore. I don't know the reason why PUR would give up such good design. Now they tell you to just change the filter after a certain time. I bought my roaster for Thanksgiving. I usually do a lot of cooking and baking for Thanksgiving and this year I made 6 baked desserts alone. I started looking for something to help me with the lack of oven space for this year and found out about the turkey roaster, I had never heard of one before. I started reading a ton of reviews on several different sites to educate myself prior to buying one. I also asked around and called a few people I knew cooked a lot for thier opinions. I got good overall feedback, so I bought this one. Maybe I shouldn't have tried a new method for the first time on such a big day as Thanksgiving... but this has a happy ending. I had a 23.22lb turkey this year. Typically I will cook a bird that big on 300-325 degrees for about 4.5 to 5.5 hours. All the reviews and the instructions stated to cook anything you are making in the roaster at the exact same temperature and time as you would a regular oven. The only two things I saw were about not opening the lid because of how much more of a loss of heat you have on a roaster vs. a regular oven. Also the complaints about a crisp outside which can be easily solved by placing your bird in the oven for just the last 20 minutes of cooking time. So I got my turkey in the preheated turkey roaster at just below 325 degrees and decided I would cook it for about five hours. I knew I didn't want to keep checking on it because of the notation about heat loss so I decided on that time from the get go since it always worked for me in the past. I got a little nervous and about 3 hours and 45 minutes into the cooking time, I decided to take a peak. A turkey is done and still tender in the thigh at 175 and more like 165 degrees in the breast, and since the turkey will continue to cook 5-10 degrees after you take it out of the oven, I usually take my bird out at 155-160 degrees when taking the temp from the breast. I freaked out when the thermometer read 215 degrees after only about 3.5 hours. I turned the roaster off and took the inside pan out and set it out in the cold to cool down as fast as possible. I admit, I started to cry at the disaster and couldn't help but think about how much that turkey cost that I worried would be a waste of money. And what would my family eat as far as meat went. But let me tell you something... I have never had a juicer turkey in my entire life. I have NO CLUE how at 215 degrees, but I went to grab the leg and the bone just came out completely clean. I guess because it is more of a steam cooking process that it stayed so juicy, or maybe because I wrapped it in bacon, but it was so good! I read someone said it took an extra hour and half, perhaps you didn't preheat the oven or thought you had it at the right temperature but it wasn't... or maybe you opened the lid too many times or didn't secure the lid to begin with, because I had the exact opposite problem. I guess I would just say to check whatever you are making just one time, half way through the originally cooking time to see how it is doing. I really shopped around when looking at crock pots because they are expensive. I had heard mixed reviews all around about the cooking temps on some of these being too high or too low or some models automatically shutting off before they are done cooking or even in some cases the electronics lock up to the point of having to unplug and leave unplugged for an hour...this doesn't do any of that. We've used it about 15 times since we bought it (often several times a week) and love throwing a whole meal in there in the morning and coming home after work to a prepared meal. This is truly a fix it and forget it crock pot! I will leave 2 comments that reference some other bad reviews on here: 1. This thing stinks - Yes, the first time you use it, it does have a weird plastic type smell that even smells in the air as you cook. This smell will go away literally after the first use. Washing it first won't help. It didn't affect the taste of the food in the least. 2. The warm feature is too hot - It is a slow cooker, so when it switches to warm, it doesn't immediately turn off like your oven. The automatic feature of it switching to warm once the timer is done is really cool. It will keep the food HOT, but not boiling. I've left it on warm for about 1-2 hours before because I wasn't ready to eat and it kept it at serving temperature, not cooking temperature. It's smart for a couple reasons. Of course, the concept is simple: trap the air between the glass and the room and the air becomes the insulator. But it's all in the implementation and that's where this product shines. It uses double-sided tape that isn't so sticky that it will pull of paint when removed. Have to get that right and they did. The real attention to detail is the film material. When installed, it better not look tacky. So they formulated the material to shrink just enough to tighten it up to pull out the hard and soft wrinkles, but not pull away from the tape! Don't worry if the tape and the film lie on perpendicular planes. The film won't pull off when it shrinks. It's resilient enough not to overcome the film-to-tape adhesion. Again: brilliant. It is also optically clear, not at all diffusive. That is another absolute must. I was simply amazed at how this product brings all this together into a cheap, effective solution to drafty old windows. Someone reviewed that the tape wouldn't stick to their window frame. Probably a surface prep issue. In my application the paint was new and firmly bonded. I even had strongly curved surfaces to tape over. I found that heating the tape with a hair dryer helped conform it to those surfaces. Directions don't address that issue and for flat surfaces it's not one. We purchased a new Whirlpool refrigerator earlier this year. The new refrigerator has all the marvelous improvements developed in the last ten years for refrigerators, including a water filter. The water filter really does deliver better water. However, the water filter seems quite expensive to me. Whirlpool, and other manufacturer's that use this type of filter, recommend the filter be replaced twice a year, whether you need to replace the filter or not. The filter is relatively easy to replace, but be aware of what happens when you pull the filter. To remove the old filter you push a button next to the filter, typically to the left of the filter. Then pull on the cap covering the filter and pull the filter out. Make a note of how the filter was oriented when you pull it out. The filter will now begin dripping water, so have a paper towel or small bowl available to let the water drip into. You can either let the filter finish dripping into a sink, or throw it into a plastic bag that you can seal to keep the water from dripping out of the bag. Be sure you remove the cover from the filter before you toss it. On our Whirlpool the cover twists counterclockwise for removal. Install the filter cover onto the new filter. It takes just a twist to lock it into place. Holding the filter so that the two straight pieces on the end of the filter are vertical, with the open portion of the filter cover oriented on the bottom, slide the new filter straight into the filter cavity until the button on the left clicks to let you know the new filter is locked into place. Note that these instructions are for a Whirlpool, but I believe most other refrigerators are similar. You should be ready to go! Had I known refrigerator water filters were so expensive I might have gone with a refrigerator without one, though our local water has a lot of chlorine in it (which is filtered out by the filter). As with many modern conveniences, this water filter represents a convenience that you did not know you needed until you had it. Now that I have it, I am wondering whether I want it since I have to spend a chunk of change each year in filter replacements. Oh well. I guess I can sleep more soundly knowing that the water filter is now removing a bunch of stuff from my water that my body either did not want or need. As a Chef I demand only the best products to work with, and this is by far the best pocket thermometer I have ever used! I love that it doesn't take me 20 seconds standing over my roasts, steaks, burgers, etc. to get a fast, accurate reading, cause I honestly don't have time for that in a busy kitchen. At first glance: The thermometer is exactly as described by the manufacturer. The response time on this thermometer is honestly the best I've had the pleasure of using... in fact I'm pretty well convinced that it even matches the speed of those very large ones with the attached probe on a wire (now granted if you pay $300+ dollars you can get one that will give you the fastest most accurate read but for the money, best deal here) I especially love the finer pointed tip on this thermometer that goes quickly, and easily into any protein that I need, no matter how tough, or thin the product is I get a perfect reading fast, so I'm never tied up waiting 30 seconds to get an accurate read out of my regular dial thermometer which you have to make sure you keep calibrated correctly, or the cheaper digital thermometers that just take longer (and the fact they have a much larger tip that DOES NOT like to go into products easily)... for a few extra bucks, SERIOUSLY BUY THIS! The extra temperature range of this thermometer is also quite handy, if even for some reason i have to check the temperature of my deep fryer its still capable of handling, extra kudos for that. And yes, it is waterproof, I have tested it. (again, extra kudos for that too) Downsides (i think definitely outweigh the sheer advantages this product has over the competition) -The large read out is great, not entirely that necessary to be that large though, or so i thought, kinda gets knocked around a bit, but the shatter proof design of the product compensates. -The sheath that the thermometer comes in holds it great, and at that would never ever slide out, problem with that design is the clip on the plastic holder doesn't hold tight to any clothing that you clip it too.. i find it actually useless (in fact I'm using a sheath from a prior thermometer) -I have experienced a couple quirky problems but those totally corrected themselves with the proper re-seating of the battery, the waterproof design is a little tricky to get right. So the downsides were the only reason this received a four star review and not a five, but its honestly the best thermometer I have ever used, and I've used them all. I hope you find this review helpful in your search for a great product, I HIGHLY recommend this product to ANYONE, weather a professional in a busy kitchen to someone at home that enjoys cooking and hates the big ol' metal ones that Gramma used for her turkeys, and wants to take the guess work out of cooking. First, I saw that one reviewer has a problem with leaking filters when used in an older Frigidaire. I've had no such problem with the original filter and two replacements that I've installed. (And yuck! to see what those filters have removed from the city water!) So, maybe higher than normal water pressure is the problem and could possibly be regulated. Just a thought. My Rating: The filters are 5-star performers but even at Amazon's lower price, I still consider them "pricey", so I dropped a star. My Tip: I kept my last filter in until performance (delivered water flow rate) had diminished considerably. It was sort of an experiment in economy. I was surprised when my ice maker started to jam with the under-sized "cubes" (they are actually shaped like half of a large thick coin) resulting from the slower water flow through the old filter. One or more of the ice ejector cogs would get jammed with one of the "runt" cubes. What obviously happens is that the water fill operation is controlled entirely by a timer, so reduced flow results in less water delivered to the tray cavities. The cycle continues and results in small cubes of ice for which the ejectors are not designed. So my tip is that if you try to extend the life of the filter by accepting the slower water delivery rate, pay attention to the size of the ice cubes. When they are reduced to about two-thirds normal size, the ice maker is likely to become jammed. It's easy to see the problem after removing the cover from the ice maker, but the only solution is to install a new filter. I purchased this product for my front-loading washer; even though I keep the door wide open when not in use, after a year the washer had developed a mildewy smell that transferred to the clean laundry. I tried using Affresh three times, and this product does not work! My washing machine actually smelled WORSE after using it! I finally poured about a cup bleach into the drum of the machine and filled the bleach dispenser tray full in order to get rid of the smell. The bleach worked fairly well but not completely. I don't like to use bleach in my machine because it is corrosive to metal (our drum is stainless steal) and can break down the rubber in the gasket and seals. I finally purchased a box of Borax for a few dollars at the grocery store. Borax is not corrosive and does not damage clothing fibers. In addition to absorbing odor, it is a natural fungicide and kills the mildew and mold that caused the odor in the washer. I sprinkled a half cup of Borax on top of a load of towels and then put the normal amount of detergent in the tray and ran a normal wash cycle. Presto--the smell is gone! My washing machine smells great, and my dishcloths and towels no longer develop a funky odor after using them. I plan to use Borax regularly to keep my laundry and washing machine smelling fresh. It's not a very glamorous solution, but it's cheap and works great! This is a great product. Based on research, it has all the bells and whistles and better materials then competitive products. If you go to the manufacturers web site, you can watch a video of the installation, use, and drainage of the product. Also, it has a well laid out FAQ section. Something to consider, these types of bladders are designed as single use. If you fill up the bladder and then don't end up using it, you can either slit the side with a knife or use the included pump to start a siphon effect into the tub drain and it will drain itself within about 60 minutes. While I am not a fan of it, other users have reported draining, cleaning and refolding the bladder for a second emergency usage. I purchased this hawk last year and I am very happy with it. I too looked at the mixed reviews and then did my homework. It needs pointing out that SOG have made two versions of this hawk. The first was with a hardwood handle. I believe the bad reviews are probably from people who bought these. I imagine that is why SOG came out with another version which featured a plastic handle. This is the type I purchased. The design is the same as the earlier model, but the new handle makes all the difference. I have abused mine by cutting tree limbs and throwing, and apart from a few scuffs and dirt, the head still sits snug like when it first arrived. Granted you could purchase a super tomahawk that would cost a huge amount, but for the price this hawk suits me fine. Apart from function it is also a nice looking tool/weapon which is suitable for both CQB or light breach work. As another reviewer stated, the sheath is good as it is one of the faster to draw from sheaths I have seen, and allows it to drop straight in to your hand. If money is no object then go for the super deluxe models being sold, but if that's not the case you won't be dissapointed with this product. First off, this IS a good light. HOWEVER, THE LIGHT YOU RECIEVE IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT THE ONE THAT IS DESCRIBED!! This is not a 3-mode, 900 lumen light. This is a 510 lumen, 5-mode light. After noting that I recieved a 5-mode light when I was expecting a 3-mode light, and although it was brighter than my 280 lumen 4Sevens light, it was nowhere near 900 lumens...I did some digging. In the reviews, many noted the 5 modes, but made no mention that it was supposed to be 3. Several people correctly noted that it seemed to be 500 lumens. So I went to the Dealextreme website and browsed the Ultrafire models. There is no model that matches the descripton. But I DID find one that matched what I recieved from Amazon, even the price point: Google "Dealextreme". When you find the site, the listing that matches what you recieve here is: "UltraFire WF-502B XM-LT6 5-Mode 510-Lumen Memory White LED Flashlight with Clip (1*18650)" THIS is what you get. You WILL NOT get a 900-lumen light with 3 modes for $16. It is likely, Amazon is not aware and this is the fault of the source. I plan to contact Amazon next to make them aware. THAT BEING SAID....A 500 lumen Ultrafire for $16 is not something to pass on. It's still a good light. And unlike many of the Fenix and 4Sevens lights I own, the strobe isn't too fast...its just the right frequency to REALLY screw somebody up who has ill-intent in the dark. Just so you know what you are getting.....If it were labeled correctly, I would rate it five stars. These are the standard filters used in many refrigerators like my Whirlpool. They filter all the water used in the ice maker and the in-door water dispenser just as you would expect them to do. The 3-pack of these is a great maoney saving costing only about $5 more than buying two of them individually. They only rate about a 4 in the star system because they never last as long as Whirlpool says they should. The owner's manual says about 5-6 months with the sort of use we put them to, and the "change me" light comes on at about the 5 month time, and the water flow through begins to diminish about the same time. But, changing the filter at the 4-month point keeps the water taste top notch. Waiting that extra month or so gives you water that isn't as clean tasting. Ah, well. I bought these for a cheap giveaway for a 'career' day presentation for my daughters' 2nd grade class, and was so impressed with the quality for the price, that I bought 500 to use for camping this summer. It was a nice switch-up from the usual "glow bracelet" things that we have done for years. We get about one 'dud' in every 15-20 lights (not bad at all). The elastic bands are easy for the kids to get on and off and they don't break. The lights last a VERY long time. I have ever used them as reading lights. We have bought these over and over again. Some time ago, I decided to stop using these expensive filters. I already have a Brita charcoal activated filter and use that filtered water directly into my Cuisinart. No problem and very good coffee. When I was using the small Cuisinart filters, I experienced a lot of problems with slow water feed resulting in steam and other problems. I decided, after spending some $16 on filters over a period of a year, that I was just wasting money on these filters. I cleaned the coffee maker after I stopped using the filters, am getting excellent coffee and no more slow water feed and a fine running coffee maker. The coffee tastes as good or better. But, please note that I am using filtered water - just not filtering it in the coffee maker. This year, I found that the filter serves another purpose which is to prevent the occasional overflowed coffee ground from clogging the feed line and preventing all of the water to pass through the filter so you end up with less cups of coffee output compared to cups of water input. With pure water, the filter will last a long time. The root cause of the slow water feed in the paragraph above turned out to be a clogged valve in the feed line. It is very important when using this coffee maker to have the right grind size.
